WORLD AIDS DAY 2014

The event "World AIDS Day Candlelit Vigil 2014" organized by The St. John's Cathedral HIV Education Centre was successfully held at the Li Hall of the St. John's Cathedral in Central on the World AIDS Day (1 December, 2014). Participants from different sectors of Hong Kong society attended the Candlelit Vigil. The event was not only aiming at remembering and supporting people living with HIV and AIDS, but also in response to the global theme for World AIDS Day from 2011-2015 "Getting to Zero", as selected by the United Nations, in order to arouse the public's awareness towards AIDS and people living with HIV, as well as achieving the goals of Zero HIV New Infections, Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths . We would like to express our gratitude towards participants and performers for their support which had facilitated to the success of the event.

According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), at the end of 2012 an estimated 35.3 million people were globally living with HIV; in 2012 there were 2.3 million new HIV infections and 1.6 million people died of AIDS-related illnesses. In addition, AIDS remains an essential public health concern in Hong Kong. According to data released by the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health, the cumulative total of HIV infections reached 6 841 which recorded high numbers by the 3rd quarter of 2014. Despite that, it is worth noting that people living with HIV are still suffering from discrimination nowadays. Many people do not understand the facts about HIV protection, and stigma, discrimination and isolation remain a reality for people living with HIV. Therefore, we aim to raise the concerns among people from different backgrounds towards those who are living with HIV, to eliminate stigmas as well as the fears against them.

At the Candlelit Vigil, guests and participants lighted up the candles which symbolized a blessing and hope for people living with HIV. We sincerely appreciated the kind support of Mr. Ho Cheuk Him and Miss Yeung Cheuk Wing who presented care for people living with HIV/AIDS through their melodious piano performances. Moreover, we would like to express our thanks to Bethune House Migrant Women's Refuge for their great support. Their marvelous performance of ethnic dance had lightened the event. Besides, the teen ambassador of "Getting to Zero" – 2014 Micro film Contest for Hong Kong Youth, Mr. Man Ho Yiu Horace had shared the message of " to create a non-discriminatory society" throughout showing the First Prize and First Runner-up entries of the Microfilm Contest.

Apart from this event, the Centre has also prepared a World AIDS Sunday Programme together with the Religious Broadcast of RTHK (in partnership with Hong Kong Christian Council) so as to arouse public awareness on AIDS.  It had already been broadcasted on 30 November, 11:05 am, on RTHK Radio 4.
